Lumsdale Glass is based in a hot glass studio in the heart of the Lumsdale Valley in Derbyshire. Owner, Jonathan Abbott, produces individual pieces of majestic, colourful, handblown glass using traditional techniques for glass-working.

Production Specifics
Before starting the glass blowing process, the glass is placed in a furnace that heats it to a temperature of 2000 degrees, making it malleable. Next, the glass is gathered by inserting one end of the blowpipe into the furnace, and rolling it over the molten glass until a “gob” of glass attaches to it. From this the glass is rolled on a marker (stone slab) to control the shape and temperature of the glass. Jonathan will then add colour and blow the glass with a blowpipe before removing and cooling the pieces. Lumsdale Glass are limited due to the size of their equipment, although there can be alternative ways of working if the project is discussed through a consultation beforehand.

Company History
Jonathan Abbott opened Lumsdale Glass in 2013. Prior to this Jonathan assisted a master glass-maker to learn the skills he needed to begin producing his own pieces. In 2013 the time came to begin producing his own work, and to put the skills he had been learning into practice. Since then Jonathan has been developing his art and taking on bespoke orders to test the boundaries and processes of working with glass. Jonathan also has a passion for working collaboratively with a range of companies to experiment and work with glass in new and exciting ways.
