Production Specifics

Lace is available in a number of qualities: 8, 10, 12 and 14 point lace. This is the number of vertical threads per inch. The higher this figure, the more delicate the lace and the more detail it is capable of creating. The largest loom is 1220cms wide. Large volumes and small runs of bespoke designs can be manufactured. Lace lends itself well to the use of pure cotton yarns and MYB prides itself on minimal use of polyester: only 5% in any given piece of Scottish Lace. Looms are 100 years old and have been adapted to work with electronic jacquards. This enables the transfer of CAD drawings to the looms. No previous knowledge is required, and the in-house design team often work in collaboration with designers on bespoke projects, enabling unique pieces of work. Projects in the past have involved translating metalwork to lace, recreating archive museum textiles and creating bespoke period pieces for film sets. Ideally a budget and project timeline is in mind.

Company History

Morton Young and Borland Ltd was founded in 1900, exclusively manufacturing Scottish Leno Gauze weave, later known as Scottish Madras. In 1913, the company invested in Nottingham Lace Looms to offer a larger variety of products to its clients and to bring Lace making to Scotland. The Irvine Valley offered the perfect damp climate for the Nottingham Lace machinery. Morton Young and Borland has developed the name MYB Textiles over the past 20 years to add a contemporary edge to their proud heritage. There is an archive of over 50,000 original lace drawings that designers can access.
