The business was founded in 1864, by Douglas Swan's great grandfather James Swan, who set up in business when the railway arrived in Kirkcudbright. This enabled him to source stone more cheaply and have it transported also at less cost, prior to this most goods arrived in Kirkcudbright by boat.
