Production Specifics

Robert Mackie have an in-house design department who will work with their technicians to interpret customer design. This process is easier and quicker if new customers have a general knowledge of knitwear, but the team can guide people through the process if required. The factory is busiest in the summer ahead of Autumn/Winter production so new products are best developed over the quieter winter months. The company stock over 140 shades on lambswool. The V Bed knitting machines in gauges from 3.5 to 12 allow for products in jacquard, stitch interest, plain and combinations of these. Minimum orders vary but on average 250 pieces, or 50 pieces in each colour to Minimum order is 200 units, with 50 units per colour variant. Sketches are advised. Robert Mackie are a Woolmark licensee, Sedex member (with corresponding Sepa Audit and Smeta Report) and work with the Ethical Trade Initiative.

Company History

Robert Mackie was established in 1845 making traditional Scottish Glengarry and Balmoral headwear, “Bonnets”, which are still manufactured today. Over the past 170 years Robert Mackie has diversified into manufacturing knitted accessories and now manufacture hats, scarves, gloves and throws that includes traditional and fashion goods. In 2015 the management bought the company from the Mackie family, which is still based in Stewarton employing around 60 people.
